  4.     INDICTED. Thomas Root, 37, the lawyer who was plucked out
  5. of the ocean last July with a mysterious gunshot wound in his
  6. abdomen after his single-engine plane ditched in the Atlantic;
  7. on 33 counts of fraud, forgery and obstruction of justice; in
  8. Washington. Root claimed he blacked out during a routine flight
  9. to North Carolina, while his Cessna 210 continued on automatic
  10. pilot until it ran out of fuel and plunged into the sea near
  11. the Bahamas. Root claimed his revolver fired accidentally when
  12. the plane crashed. According to the indictment, Root was being
  13. investigated at the time of the flight for financial
  14. irregularities.
